Our Council Working In The Community
-Ariana Cleavenger
To continue highlighting the great success on the San Tan Foothills campus with the new Sabercat Chronicle edition, the journalism team is taking the initiative to spotlight great community service projects that clubs, groups, and students are getting involved in.
On November 9, 2016 the San Tan Foothills Student Council went and volunteered at Feed My Starving Children. The Student Council arrived at 9:30 and left at 11:30 that same morning. The council broke off into teams and packed bags of food. The bags of food were called Mana rice packs and consisted of four ingredients. The four ingredients were vitamins, vegetables, soy, and rice and they were inserted into the bags in that order. At the Feed My Starving Children facility there were various jobs to do. One person had to scoop the vitamins and vegetables and another had to scoop rice and soy. Also, someone had to accept the job of holding bags under a funnel to collect the ingredients the scoopers were dropping.
After the baggers were done collecting the ingredients, someone had to be at the weighing station to ensure that the bags did not exceed the designated weight limit. After the bags were weighed they were sent to the lamination station where the bags were sealed. After the bags were sealed they were sent down the table to be placed in a box. Each box holds 36 Mana rice packs and a pallet of boxes includes 36 boxes of Mana rice packs. Student Council packed 147 boxes total which amounted to 31,752 meals. That number of meals is enough to feed 86 kids for one year. The total cost of the food that was packed by Student Council came up to $6,985.44.
When asked why the community service event was performed and what her council gained from performing the community service, Shannon Jauregui replied by saying, “I think the most important thing we gained as a council is perspective. We take things like being able to eat every day for granted. This event, I think, humbled all of us, and allowed us to not only remember how fortunate we are, but gave us the opportunity to help those in need.”
The community service event was a great opportunity for the Student Council kids and it kicked off the year as the first community service event. Student Council says that they plan on continuing with more community service and they plan on going to Feed My Starving Children again. Student Council encourages community service and they hope to see other clubs and students getting involved.
