Defending the Defenseless

-Marlene Leon

Many people don’t align with their beliefs/morals with their actions. Why is that? Regardless of why they do the things they do, many people are still judgmental toward vegans, saying that we’re extremists. I believe that our “extremism” comes from true passion that lies within because taking the path of veganism, comes the path of understanding, acceptance, and growth. We learn how to evolve whether that be towards ourselves, animals, or people. We do more than preach what we know, we also try new things, and learn to love the things around us as natural as they come.

As time itself goes on we thrive for more adventure. I strongly believe that’s why vegans are more happy and simply exquisite. I never thought rejecting meat was a thing until I actually got introduced to what it truly is. After seeing all the evidence of this cruel act I brought the question into spotlight, “Will I become vegan?” and I am glad to say that I did. People also express the fact that being vegan is “way too much” but becoming vegan does not mean you have to buy mock meats and cashew ‘cheese’cakes every week. Most staple foods in cultures are vegan and cheap such as: rice, corn, potatoes, and beans with these foods costing mere cents per pound.

Being vegan spreads the word that it comes with major benefits not only for your health, but also for people around the world. If you set things into statistics then you’d conclude that if you round up all the grains we use to fatten up livestock and give the millions of people starving around the world the nutrients needed to survive, then world hunger would not be a thing that we fund with charity. For example, when you eat a plant-based meal you save up to 3000 gallons of water and 16LBS of grains.

We all participate in being green on Earth Day, but do you really think cleaning up after yourself for one day out of 365 days will minimize the damage we cause to our planet the rest of those days? If everyone became vegan it would help the planet by decreasing climate change up to 51% because animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change.  In addition it helps conserve water, because more than 70% of freshwater is used in animal agriculture. Avoiding the consumption of meat has a more positive impact than turning your shower top off before stepping in. Eating aquatic animals has caused damage too, because overfishing damages oceans, rivers and the species involved. Which has lead to 87% of fisheries to be extinct or in the process of extinction. May I add that 93% of the coral reef is affected by bleaching, which is putting the reef in danger of total extinction.

The importance of veganism has spread to many people across the world. And has inspired people to change the way they think and what they eat in their daily lives. Veganism has given people the courage to stand up to what is morally right. Allow yourself to be more open minded and passionate. It’s a way of life, it’s a lifestyle, it’s veganism.
