Chess Club!

By Eloniee Pope

Interested in Chess? Competing in chess competitions? Well now is your chance! “Chess club is a way to learn the art of chess” says Mr. Carrell, the advisor of the club. It’s also a really good way to build up your skills for competition. Mr. Carrell had been a co- advisor at his old school and once he came to San Tan Foothills and saw the position was open, he gladly took it! His main goals are to get more members and to become a competing club. There are currently 8 members and more are very welcomed. Meetings are every Wednesday during lunch in his classroom C146 as well as after school in the library every Monday.

Chess does build Character. “We always pride ourselves with chess being a gentleman's sport” Mr. Carrell says. Before every match they say “good luck” to one another and after every match they say “good job” and shake hands. It builds sportsmanship. Not only does chess build character and sportsmanship, it builds brainpower as well. Chess is a strategy game. It makes you think about the future and future steps that your opponent might make. Moves that you'll have to avoid or make in order to win. Always having a goal in mind is key. “ Best part is not knowing what you're going to do but anticipating what the other person's move is.”. It  gives you the ability to plan ahead or set a goal or passing obstacles which is helpful for actual everyday life. So if you feel like you would want to be apart of the chess club, join today!
