An Afternoon with Mr. Tom Pruitt

Are you interested in learning about the body and going into the medical field? How about competing, at a 5 star resort, and having fun doing what you love? Mr. Pruitt of San Tan Foothills, our Sports Medicine teacher, is also chapter advisor for Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA).

Sports Medicine is a way to learn about the body and how it works. If you need to learn anatomy or want to, Sports Medicine is a fantastic class to join. You support athletes at games such as football, basketball, soccer and any other sport. Mr. Pruitt travels with the San Tan Foothills football team. He takes students in his Sports Medicine class to the football games to help out and gain real life experience about injuries.

Learning about the body and how it works, is a great way to also learn about your health. HOSA prepares students for “future health careers” Pruitt told us. Competing in HOSA is an amazing way to get into colleges and get scholarships.

Travel and make an impact in your life! Take that leap! All it takes is just some effort to join HOSA. Joining HOSA makes you more confident, gives you more courage and teaches you to do things independently. Meeting new people is an advantage that HOSA holds. If you’re competing, making new friends is one of the things YOU will do.

Some of the benefits of being in HOSA is going to the Westin La Paloma, a 5 star resort. Pruitt stated that in fact, “Traveling and meeting other HOSA members around the state, or qualifying for nationals competitions and then traveling around the country” is just another one of the many perks.

Scholarships are available. “Yes, big time, Arizona HOSA told us that they have enough scholarship money because not enough people applied for scholarships”.

"Anybody can join HOSA” Mr. Pruitt stated very clearly. HOSA is a fantastic organization, anybody young or old can join. "If you want to join, come ask me to join”.

When I asked Mr. Pruitt how he would improve HOSA, he said “They limit that students can only compete in one event at the state level, I would allow students to compete in different competitions, meaning they can compete in more than one category”.

Come join HOSA and Sports Medicine for the time of your life.
