Girls of the Court

- Devon Ziman

Another notorious program here at Foothills is the girls basketball team.  Coached by a knowledgeable coach, Coach Juan Lopez.  With Coach Lopez stating that last season came and went with “more disappointments than highlights”, he has something to prove this season.  “Last year’s season we didn’t have a whole lot of girls to rotate in the lineup; our team this year is made up of four seniors and eight freshman so it’s definitely an improvement from last year. Our girls have never given up in the face of doubt, they’ve never stopped competing because they know things will get better.  And this year it will pay off.” said Coach Lopez.

When asked about what the team was talented at, Coach Lopez had a couple things to say. “Our girls have a continuous competitive drive no matter what the score shows, this will definitely come into use when other teams are up and let their guard down.  I ask one thing from my players and that is to leave everything on the court and never cheat yourself or your teammates.  Although our record does not indicate our progress, we are making leaps and bounds from last year’s team”.

Keys to a successful season this year are a main focus in Coach’s mind as he mentioned they have not been abundant.  His main focus is execution.  “Everything always looks great at practice, but when it comes to game time, some players tend to panic and forget their assignments.  If they would just relax and execute what they were doing in practice it would definitely show positive results in our seasons record.  Along with staying relaxed, our girls need to play offensive minded”.  Coach Lopez says there is one goal, “get the ball through the hoop”.  So if a play breaks down the girls need to trust their abilities to not come up empty on the possession.

If you’re looking to watch close, exciting, hard fought games this year, this is your team to watch.  Everyone likes to see the underdog come out with the big win.  From the looks of it, we’ll be seeing a lot of that this year.
