Yearbook

- Ariana Cleavenger

On the San Tan Foothills campus, we are taking the initiative to spotlight our athletics, academics, electives, and arts. This quarter we are making a point to recognize some of the great programs here on campus. The program of focus within this article is Yearbook. A member of our journalism team interviewed Yearbook’s exceptional advisor, Dr. Snow, to better understand the program as well as him as an advisor.

To kick off the interview, we asked some basic facts about yearbook from Dr. Snow. He said that this year there is a total of seventeen students working on the yearbook. They all have various jobs including creating pages, editing pages, taking photos, and fabricating marketing videos. After getting some background, we asked if the Yearbook department had any big projects in the works and how those projects were progressing. Dr. Snow replied with, “Our biggest project at this time is editing all of the senior cap and gown photos before placing them in the yearbook.  We also have 31 pages due to the publisher on February 27th.  At that time we will have completed 61 of the 91 pages that will make up this year’s book.” The San Tan Foothills Yearbook team has been working very hard this year and Dr. Snow stated that he hopes the team reaches the overall goal of selling all 150 copies of the yearbook that is being ordered and that students are happy with the results. Dr. Snow pushes his students to achieve greatness and he reminded the journalism team that “unlike other courses, Yearbook is a business; we have a product to sell and that takes drive, commitment, and creativity on the part of the students.” He has been teaching Yearbook at San Tan Foothills for nine years and he says that he really enjoys helping students to create a historical record of each year. We asked what he hopes students take away or gain from the yearbook and he replied saying that he hopes students who buy a yearbook look back on their time at STFHS and enjoy all the good memories. We then asked Dr. Snow if there were any surprises for the 2016-2017 school year, he told us that the yearbook price has been reduced to $30, which is a $20 savings from previous years.

Lastly, to end the interview we asked if he is looking for more members and what advice he would you give to students interested in joining. He told us that for students who are interested in joining they need to make sure they have a strong internal motivation to succeed because as he mentioned before the class is serious and has the goal of producing, marketing, and selling a yearbook that will satisfy students. He also stated that he is always looking for students with strong writing and artistic skills. He ended the interview by expressing, “The yearbook is not about me or the faculty, it’s about students, and Yearbook students must in tune with what is happening on campus as it relates to student interests.” In conclusion, if you are interested in capturing campus life and memories of STFHS by taking photos, constructing yearbook pages, editing pages, and promoting the sale of the yearbook then you can contact Dr. Snow @ bsnow@fusdaz.org. Just remember the class is hard work and it takes a certain level of creative writing and art skills, but if you are determined and very motivated, you will succeed and likely enjoy this interesting class.
